Home Office plans to clamp down on illegal immigrants will be discussed soon with education authorities, it was announced this week.
The new curbs were announced by Home Secretary Michael Howard as part of a drive to tighten controls on the payment of social security, housing, free NHS treatment and student awards.
A DFEE spokesman said, however, that headteachers would not be asked to “snoop” on illegal immigrants. The department was simply being asked whether schools and education authorities would benefit from guidance on what to do if they came across illegal immigrants.
