Writing on political cartoons, Tanmoy Biswas suggests that “cartoons from across the Iron Curtain were always hard to find”. Not so. In the 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, I was teaching Russian to grammar school sixth-formers. The school library subscribed regularly to the Soviet satirical Krokodil which abounded in cartoons, many of them political. Availability was certainly not a problem.
