The Parliament’s education (plus culture and sport) committee acted like real pussies at last week’s hearing, giving both the GTC and Douglas Osler, the head of the inspectorate, no sign of tooth or claw. The explanation is probably that the MSPs had their minds on other things, as they were due later that morning to issue a hard-hitting report on the performance of Scottih Opera and the arts world in general.
The distraction was rather confirmed when Brian Monteith, the Tories’ energetic education (and culture and sport) spokesman, suggested that the provision in the education bill under which ministers would be able to alter the composition of GTC committees “gives the Executive more power than it has over Scottish Opera.”
