The seminar was the second during the week on school buildings, underlining growing awareness of the important links between learning and good design.

Next year will see further moves with an international conference planned for Glasgow.

The seminar was supported by Yorkon, a company which specialises in modular construction technology. It claims to be able to reduce building times by half, minimising disruption through the use of prefabrication.

Peter Warner of Yorkon says the system is 40 per cent more thermally efficient than traditional buildings. Among the features are solar panels, special roofing, wind turbines and dual flush low-level toilets.

Yorkon is to build a primary for 500 pupils in East Kilbride.
