Eyebrows were raised by the spectacle of young, and predominantly female, students dancing during the gala dinner at the Association of Colleges’ annual conference last week.

“It’s for the entertainment of middle-aged men,” suggested a female delegate, diverting FErret’s attention momentarily from the fine choreography.

My friend’s feathers were less ruffled when it was the turn of some scantily-clad young male dancers to perform.

The entertainment, after some stunning extracts from “Les Miserables”, ended with something three ministers had been unable to achieve - a standing ovation.
