Three talented young musicians from Scotland were among the star turns at the prestigious Radio 2 Young Folk Awards last Friday.

Duo Siobhan Miller, 20, a singer and pianist from Penicuik, who studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, and singer, pianist and fiddler Jeana Leslie, 19, from Kirkwall, Orkney, were alongside five other soloists and groups vying for the top award.

Soloist Emily Hoile, 15, who plays the clarsach and studies at St Mary’s School in Edinburgh, was also competing in the event at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, on London’s South Bank.

Fiona Hyslop, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “The dedication that these young people have shown to preserving Scotland’s musical heritage must be praised.

“We have a rich tradition which contributes greatly to our economy and it is important that we capture the enthusiasm of young musicians early on.”
