My Year 2 class has been “big book” mad since we began trialling the literacy hour - a new one every week. We’ve even looked at poems blown up to A3 size, highlighted rhyming words and covering up adjectives with Post-Its.

It’s 9.30am and we’re all sitting on the mat reading aloud from the shared text. It’s now 9.45am and it’s going well.

“Where is today’s story set?” I ask.

Eager hands shoot up and Ben is chosen to reply.

“It’s set on the new big book stand you bought, Miss.”

There’s not a lot more you can say about the literacy hour.

We pay Pounds 30 for each Soundbite we publish. Send yours, of about 150 words, to Sarah Bayliss, ‘The TES’, Admiral House, 66-68 East Smithfield, London E1 9XY. Fax: 0171 782 3200
