Seventeen-year-old Danny is a lad I’ve tutored for more than a year. His best subjects are maths and computing, and some might say that he’s too money-minded at times.
He’s recently started getting quite matey in tutor group meetings, chatting to me about local news. Imagine my horror when he enthused to me that he was “sorry he was late, but local builders in town had discovered a massive 1,000-pound World War Two bomb in the ground”.
“Really, Danny?” I said, almost certain it was another spectacular excuse. “What else do you know? Is it safe to go into town?” “Dunno. All I know is what I’ve just told you - how much the bomb cost.”
