Early on in my career I was taking a painting lesson with a Year 5 class, introducing them to the visual styles and techniques of the late 19th-centuryImpressionist painters.

One of the boys had really caught on to the style of one particular member of that brotherhood. He showed me his latest piece of work.

“Ah,” I enthused, “that’s just like the style of Vincent Van Gogh.”

To which, in all innocence, he replied:
