A class of Year 2 pupils were asked what they wished to do when they were older. One wrote: “When I am older I want to go on the octopus at Flamingoland” (referring to a theme park in Yorkshire).

Another was a long-term planner: “When I grow up I want to be a vet, but would like to retire early.”

Bill Bower

I was teaching some 10-year-olds about the Crucifixion, trying to emphasise how much pain Jesus must have felt by asking them to stretch their arms out at their sides. After about 30 seconds, most had given up - so I told them Jesus had spent nine hours in that position.

“But it was easy for him,” one pupil replied. “He had something to lean on.”
