THRASS (Teaching Handwriting Reading And Spelling Skills) is a picture-based training website for teachers. It explains the four phases of learning to read, using synthetic phonics. The resources section recommends books, cards and software and the site links to a Macromedia Flash application called the Phoneme Machine which uses images of human lips to demonstrate the pronunciation of words frequently found in children’s reading books. Designed to help children beginning to read, struggling with reading or learning English as a second language, 44 sounds (phonemes) and the 120 main spelling choices (graphemes) of English are provided.
