More than 200,000 American pupils are subject to physical punishment every year - including beatings and spankings, according to Human Rights Watch. At least one-fifth who receive corporal punishment have disabilities. The incidence is highest in five southern states - Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Georgia.
