To mark the recent award of the T S Eliot Prize (an award of pound;5,000 for the best collection of new poetry in 1999) to Hugo Williams for Billy’s Rain, the Poetry Book Society has produced a free souvenir programme including one poem from each of the shortlisted poets (“Screendoor” from Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red; “Anne Hathaay” from Carol Ann Duffy’s The World’s Wife; and so on). As well as offering teaching ideas for key stage 4, the PBS invites students to select their favourite poem and tell them why. The best answer will receive the entire shortlist for the school library.
