CHILDREN with special educational needs are having their work published in a commemorative anthology as a tribute from Wakefield district mayor, Robert Mitchell, who chose the cause as his main charity this year.

Hundreds of pieces of poetry and artwork produced by five to 19-year-olds are being categorised and collated by three teachers from Oakfield Park, Highfield and Pinderfields Hospital schools in a book to go on sale later this summer.

The mayor said: “The poetry is largely concerned with the day to day lives of the children attending our special schools. Much of the poetry is humorous although some is lyrical or sad.

“The subject matter ranges from a 14-year-old’s perception of ‘love’ to the delicate and thoughtful poems that pupils with autism have produced in response to the question ‘who am I?’.”

Mr Mitchell has raised pound;6,000 so far during his year in office.

Anyone wanting to make a donation or find out more about the mayor’s charity can contact Amanda Johnson or Susan Lightfoot in the Civic Functions Office on 01924 305141.
