The Netherlands: The education ministry has made a compact disc to encourage primary schools and their pupils to accommodate children with special needs.

The CD, titled Weer samen naar School (Back to School Together) with accompanying karaoke version and workbook, has been distributed to the country’s 10,000 primary schools at a cost of around Pounds 20,000 in a bid to stem the recent surge in the numbers of pupils with special needs being referred to special schools.

The lyrics of one of the eight songs, about “Bas . . . the fattest, stupidest kid in the class”, continue “But we don’t want to lose our big silly Bas”. One of the less politically-correct numbers sings the praises of the education ministry: “The boss of schools works extra hard to make sure that there is a place for all of us.”
