Quirky Quizzes for Lively Libraries are two photocopiable 50-page books for key stage 3 pupils that go beyond the hackneyed formula of random questions and pointless answers. The purpose is to provoke research and discussion, not just stir the memory. Topics covered include history, literature and science. Some queries will send pupils to dictionaries, encyclopaedias and the internet. Some involve thinking skills as well as recall. Others are not answerable (do doctors work harder than gardeners?), but will make fruitful argument flow. The book costs pound;17.50 each or pound;29.95 for both, from Carel.
