We’ve been bringing our Year 6 children to Blists Hill for several years.
It provides an opportunity for them to get experience of the similarities and differences between life in Victorian times and today.
The Victorian lesson was the highlight of our latest visit. It included a taster of spelling, reading, writing, maths and geography so I could certainly see how differently I teach them today. But there were similarities too.
We still concentrate on similar basics, even if methods have changed.
There’s far less recitation now and less writing down. And Victorian concepts like “You will not rise above your station” are simply no longer relevant.
Working on the Victorians back in the classroom, I plan to get the children to write a diary of a Victorian schoolchild and then act it to reinforce what they have experienced here.
As part of the museum’s education package, we will receive a CD-Rom of pictures of the visit - a brilliant idea.
