The children got a lot from it. It was geared to more capable pupils to demonstrate the four stages of scientific thinking, but Julian Walker adjusted his teaching as he went along. He was very flexible and had a great manner with the kids. They certainly grasped some of the stages, but they could have done with a bit more work on the others. But that’s a quibble really, as they enjoyed it.
We don’t do many scientific trips because its often too expensive. This workshop is totally off curriculum, but I wanted to get the children thinking in a totally different way and it certainly did that. Julian challenged them and they would not otherwise have had the opportunity to think in the way he taught them or to use a resource like this.
I will draw on it in science and try hard to stick to the four steps in future. And now they have begun to think broadly about scientific experiments we will discuss methods and processes more.
