Mike Archer is a tutor at Yeovil College

All these students are on an Engineering Foundation programme. Most of them are sponsored by companies, such as Westland, Daido Industrial Bearings, CME and Gooch Housego - or are interested in joining the RAF or going to university. I brought a group two years ago and they won the challenge, so I was keen to return.

Students do a full five-day programme at the college, so it’s nice for them to do something different. It also encourages them to work together as a team, as at college they tend to stick together in groups. There are 18 here today, working in teams of 6. It broadens their horizons and gives them a flavour of the environment in which they’ll be working.

The museum is a fantastic backdrop as they can explore the exhibits and models to get inspiration for the challenge. It must have inspired some of them as one of the three teams were crowned the day’s winners - good news indeed for the aeronautical industry!
