We came to Creswell Crags because other classes recommended it. It’s relevant to quite a few of the topics I’ve taught recently.
For example, we’ve just studied rocks and soils, which ties in with how the gorge was formed. We’ve also been reading Stig of the Dump. I prepared the pupils by saying we’re going to visit a cave of the kind Stig might have lived in. The cave is unusual and exciting for the children. I liked Michelle’s story about the boy who lived in the cave; it was interesting and made the children think. I can use that in the work I do in the classroom; getting them to think back and compare his experience with their own.
I might try to create a play about what it’s like to be an ice-age person and maybe build an assembly around it. All in all, the children had a good day out with lots of fun. Although the museum can accommodate large groups, a maximum of 25 people are allowed in the cave at any one time.
