The Annual Conference of the Mathematical Association will be held at the University of Sussex from April 9-12, with a SYMS Day of workshops, activities, games, puzzles and a maths trail on Saturday April 8 organised by the Society of Young Mathematicians.

The conference is for people interested in the teaching of maths at all levels from primary to university. Monday is designated Primary Day and Tuesday Secondary Day.

The Opening Lecture on Sunday is by Professor J Maynard-Smith FRS (Sussex) on “Mathematical Ideas in Biology”. The Hilary Shuard Memorial Lecture will be given by Jefferey Goodwin (Anglia Polytechnic University), and other primary sessions include five workshops. Non-primary sessions include Statistical talks by Professor N Davies (Nottingham Trent University) and Peter Holmes (Sheffield University) and a lecture by Dr Tony Gardiner (Birmingham University), “Five Years on; the Mathematics Curriculum in the Year 2000”.

Graham Merlane (ex-HMI) will talk on “Inspection of Mathematics” and Peter Lacy and Richard Browne are giving an “Update from SCAA”.
