The first ever guide for staff governors in further education was launched this week by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) at a conference in London. Every college is required to have between one and three staff members on its governing body. The guide, launched at the the annual staff governors conference on Thursday, explains the role of the staff governor in full, including restrictions on their input. Sally Hunt, general secretary of the University and College Union, launched the guide with LSIS programme director Sue Lovell, and said: “Over the next year, when colleges face major changes with the abolition of the LSC and the creation of new systems for further education, the voice of staff, articulated through staff governors, will be an indispensable element in shaping how colleges meet these challenges.”
