Staff shortage hits the deaf

Funding problems and a shortage of specialist teachers has left deaf children facing an educational “postcode lottery”, a report published this week warned. Many deaf children in mainstream schools are supported by unqualified staff and the quality of help varies widely from area to area, said the research for the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.

There are approximately 25,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing children in England. Four out of five attend mainstream schools.
