WIGAN’S director of education, Bob Clark, is to take charge temporarily of the education service in neighbouring Liverpool. Liverpool’s previous director, Frank Cogley, has taken early retirement after a critical inspection report on the education authority. Liverpool council decided to appoint Mr Clark, aged 51, until the recruitment of a permanent official in the autumn. Management consultancy KPMG has been appointed by Estelle Morris, the standards minister, to prepare a report on the future of the education service and to consider whether parts should be contracted to the private sector.
