School: Elphinstone Primary, Tranent, East Lothian, 49 pupils; Headteacher Elizabeth Wood.

What has been the best arts company to visit your school in the past year? The Philip Spellacy school puppetry programme.

How did you hear about them? A flier was sent to the school. We checked out references with other schools.

What did they do? A puppet circus followed by puppet-making workshops.

Did you do any preparation beforehand? We did theme work introducing circus characters.

Any follow-up work? Yes, with puppets, costume making, performance, painting and art work.

How long did they stay? One day.

How much did they cost?

Pounds 150.

Who paid? The school.

What was so good about them? They were amazing. Spell-binding stuff for five to seven-year-olds. A rare combination of originality and quality. The best ever experience for very young children.

How relevant was their work to the curriculum? Completely -from drama and performance to art and design work.
