What has been the best arts event to visit your school in the past year? The Africa Bus, which is based in Edinburgh. They performed a puppet show and allowed the children to clamber all over their bus to learn about South Africa.
How did you hear about them? From a circular.
What did they do? They put on a Muppets-style puppet show which was reminiscent of the old film Never Go with Strangers. It was a nicely moralistic tale about the dangers of false friendships Did you do any preparation beforehand? We had been doing a project on Africa.
Did you do any follow-up work? Yes. They left worksheets for the children.
How much did it cost? We made a donation in the region of Pounds 30-40 Who paid? The school fund.
What was so good about them? They held the kids’ attention, even the Primary 7s. It was almost like an old-fashioned pantomime, with the children shouting out “ooh” and “aah’’ and “look out, he’s behind you!’’ They were young people and quite modern in their approach.
How relevant was it to the curriculum? It tied in beautifully. Instead of textbooks or videos, the children were able to handle real artefacts.
