School: St John’s Primary, Barshare, Cumnock, East Ayrshire. Headteacher: Ms Maureen Cardie.

Pupil roll: 83. Ages of children involved: Primary 3 and 4 What was the best arts company or event to visit your school in the past year? Kim Bergsagel from the Edinburgh Puppet Company.

How did your hear about it? From the East Ayrshire Arts Focus magazine.

How long did she spend with you? She was with us for the whole day.

What did she do? She conducted a workshop with Primaries 3 and 4 on the Egyptians which is what they were studying in class. The workshop began with devising the story of life in those times, and followed through all the way to making the puppets - shadow puppets - with paper and sticks, and putting on a performance at the end ofthe day.

Did you do any preparation work beforehand? Class work just progressed, enriched by it.

How much did the visit cost? pound;100.

Who paid? It was subsidised by the School Activities Grant from East Ayrshire Arts.

What was so good about the visit? The fact that the project was developed throughout the day and the children could see the progress from the very beginnings of the story through the practical work culminating in the performance. It gave the children a very clear grasp of the story and brought the subject to life by involving them in it.

How relevant was it to the curriculum? It related to their environmental studies project on the Egyptians and to expressive arts.
