Should you, or should you not, look your pupils in the eye? A friend of the Diary, a mature entrant to secondary teacher training, is all at sea on the matter. One tutor has told her firmly not to make eye contact. A teacher friend agrees, suggesting she should look instead into the middle distance “so they think you might be looking at them”. Back at her teacher-training institution, another tutor says firmly that she must make eye contact with each pupil at least once every two minutes. It fair makes you blink.
