David Henderson reports on what lies ahead for the growing trend towards curriculum flexibility in secondaries

“If Standard grade works for the majority of pupils, why do we want to change?” John Curley, an education officer in Glasgow, asked. Courses were reasonably successful with high pass rates.

Secondaries which did their own thing would cause problems for continuity when 400 third-year pupils shifted school each year in the city.

Introducing Intermediate courses more widely would also bring substantial costs to local authorities.
