A gallery focusing on the medieval history of Inverness and the Highlands has opened at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. Many of the artefacts were uncovered during an excavation close to the museum in the late 1970s and early 1980s; others, including a rare instrument used to weigh coins, were found by local people using metal detectors.

Visitors can find out about the early days of Inverness, which was laid out as a new town by King David I of Scotland. During one 100-year period, the castle was sacked no fewer than 15 times by various invaders, including the Lord of the Isles.

The new gallery also features original and replica items that illustrate the area’s medieval trades.

An education pack for primary schools is being evaluated. For further information, tel 01463 237114.
