A POSITIVE, low-key response to elitism in education was commended this week by the Education Minister in launching Scholar, a programme to help some pupils make the transition to further or higher education.
The Scholar forum comprises the four Lothian education authorities, five FE colleges, Heriot-Watt University and Scottish Knowledge, the company which markets higher educatio expertise abroad. Its initial programme offers six key subjects which provide a route into science, technology and engineering. Other subjects are due next summer.
Roy Jobson, Edinburgh’s director of education, said that the “extremely exciting development” would enhance sixth-year school provision by extending subject choice and giving high-quality teaching materials.
