WYNNE Harlen, director of the Scottish Council for Research in Education for the past eight years, is to retire. The post, which carries a salary of up to Pounds 63,201, is being advertised early next month.

Her successor will work with a new chairman in Bill Furness, formerly manager of BT Scotland, whose appointment by the Secretary of State was announced a fortnight ago.
