SIR Herman Ouseley may be right to criticise the Teacher Training Agency for lacking commitment to equity (TES, July 17).
However, he is wrong when he insists that the view that “many white teachers racially stereotype ethnic-minority pupils’’ is not contentious. In fact, this is a claim that has been much debated.
Moreover, contrary to what he says, the research on which it is based has been challenged on methodological grounds: seeP Foster et al Constructing Educational Inequality, Falmer, 1996.
