In a week that has seen heated debate on morality and discipline in our school system, TES staff report on proposals for offering a framework for good behaviour and citizenship to the nation’s children.

An obscure but wealthy American think tank is appealing to the baser instincts of British pupils in an attempt to stifle the moral malaise.

The Templeton Foundation, which exists to promote world wide spiritual enlightenment, has this week offered a Pounds 1,000 prize to the winners of a national essay-writing competition, plus Pounds 1,500 to their schools.

There will be two categories - 13-plus and below - and pupils will be expected to write some 300 words on a central moral theme. Details of the competition from The Christian Education Movement on 01332 296655.
