The oldest teacher registration body in the world - the General Teaching Council for Scotland - was this week asked to offer advice to Sweden. Ahead of elections, there is said to be cross-party support for a new system of registering teachers. Outside Britain and Ireland, no western European countries have a similar system, the GTC points out.
