Raymond Soltysek rightly asserts that he “walked away from the classroom” (Letters, September 25), and this is the problem at the heart of Scottish education: decisions and policies made by self-styled “experts” who proclaim themselves a success and continue to produce inappropriate and time-wasting documents and policies that benefit no one except themselves.

“Walking back into classrooms dozens upon dozens of times a year” does not make Mr Soltysek an expert, as he suggests. Nor does it mean A Curriculum for Excellence or many of the other blueprints are a good use of time and money, as the classrooms selected for such sampling are always picked to suit the agenda.

I do care about the welfare of all my pupils, but believe that the discipline measures that were in place years ago, and have subsequently been eroded by “experts”, are responsible for the decline in Scottish education these days.
