Harlequin Mills Boon, which publishes 64 per cent of the UK’s romantic fiction, and dominates the international market with imprints such as ‘Enchanted’, ‘Presents’, ‘Temptation’ and ‘Silhouette’, receives about 5,000 submissions into its Surrey office each year. Mills Boon says that all submission are read, and that material sent in by authors receives the same consideration as that sent in by agents.

What it looks for is ‘sparkle’ and ‘genuine emotion’ and says real passion for the genre counts for more than the polished technique of experienced writers.

Send a stamped, addressed envelope for guidelines on submitting a synopsis (no unrequested manuscripts wanted) and on the required length, tone, degree of explicitness for each of the publisher’s imprints, to: Editorial department, Harlequin Mills Boon, Eton House, 18-24 Paradise Road, Richmond, Surrey TW9 1SR.
