Back to Strathclyde University for a very pleasant soiree to mark the launch of the second edition of the magnum opus, Scottish Education, presided over by academic veterans Walter Humes and Tom Bryce (and reviewed in the opinion columns of The TES Scotland last week).

Readers not already acquainted with Humes’s acerbic wit will be more than aware now from his regular column of his iconoclasm, frequently (if not entirely) directed at the Scottish educational establishment in its various guises.

But has the poacher turned gamekeeper? For we can reveal that the Humes-Bryce project took the ultimate shilling - from no less than the Scottish Executive.

On the other hand, perhaps it is the Exec that has turned, making a more comfortable bed for Humes to climb into. We shall be watching.
