I WAS disappointed to read Philip Pullman’s article. He is wrong. Helping children to “read with enjoyment” and to “develop their powers of imagination, inventiveness and critical awareness” are among the overriding aims of the strategy and are clearly set out in the introduction to the Framework for teaching.
Those of us involved centrally with the strategy are passionately committed to the principle that children should not only be able to read and write well but should want to do so.
Thanks to the efforts of thousands of primary teachers and support staff, many more of our young people are able to enjoy reading the work of authors like Philip Pullman and to appreciate the craft of their writing.
