DAVID Blunkett, the Education and Employment Secretary thinks it is reasonable for teachers to be paid according to the performance of their pupils.

Professor Tim Brighouse (TES, April 2) points out that children are in school for only nine minutes of every waking hour.

Professor Michael Barber has produced research showing that pupils involved in extra-curricular activities do better in school.

Is it unreasonable to join up this thinking and conclude that pay rises should be offered to all those adults who help pupils to learn out of school and, in many cases, motivate them while they are in school?
