The class of fourth-year leavers was on its way to a careers convention when it passed the town’s war memorial. One girl paused for a long time, lost in thought.

“Come on, Debbie, what is it?” asked the teacher.

“Please sir, it says here that 500 fell,” she replied. “How come they all fell here?”
