Anne Fine is never afraid to tackle hard issues and How to Cross the Road and not Turn into a Pizza (Walker Books pound;6.99) addresses a subject that gets far less attention than it used to.

Opening with an amusing four-page riff on catch-fire gossip about a boy who has had some kind of road accident, the book then observes a primary teacher, Miss Tarentino, giving an impromptu lesson in road-crossing.

The author’s message is a strong and clear one - that crossing the road safely is something that needs to be learned.

The illustrations are by Tony Ross. Essential reading for Year 3 and above.
