Up to half of schools in Brighton and Hove could be closed on Wednesday after teaching assistants voted overwhelmingly to strike in protest against a new pay deal.

The GMB and Unison unions have rejected the council’s proposal for reduced pay in holiday periods, claiming staff would see their salaries rise by as little as pound;20-30 a year after their grades had been reassessed.
