Ministers will face a spring of discontent in the FE sector with a second London college voting this week for an all-out indefinite strike.
Kingsway College members of the lecturers’ union, NATFHE, voted to walk out from May 14 in protest at proposed staffing cuts.
Principal Richard Williams plans to shed 18 full-time teaching and management posts and 36 support staff and to slash part-time hours by 40 per cent to overcome a Pounds 5 million deficit.
Lecturers are angry at the cuts and local union leaders are predicting a 1,000-strong turn-out for a march on the threatened sites in the London borough of Camden, set for Tuesday.
Mr Williams, who was appointed last summer, drew up the cuts package after auditors discovered the deficit.
News of the Kingsway College action emerged as talks to avert an all-out strike at neighbouring Southwark College seemed to be close to deadlock.
Around a dozen colleges nationwide currently face the threat of industrial action.
