ZIMBABWE:More than 600 teachers have been fired for joining a nationwide strike for more pay, the state-owned Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation reported. The call for a 100 per cent pay rise, as 130 per cent inflation eats away teacher earnings, is being led by the Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe. Union leader Raymond Majongwe was arrested and charged under the country’s Public Order and Security Act for “invading the rights of others” when he urged teachers to join the strike. Education minister Aeneas Chigwedere declared the strike illegal. But the union has urged teachers to go to work but not teach. Mr Majongwe said last week: “We know we cannot sustain running battles with the police, but what we can do is go to schools and not teach.”
