FE sector’s latest attempts to diversify into retailing have not come to fruition.

It seems there won’t be any room for yet more retail space in north London’s fashionable enclave, Angel. Apparently, instead, the site is to be overrun by even more students than anticipated.

The new sixth-form centre, built for City amp; Islington college, was planned as a development which would include retail space on the ground floor.

But, according to the college: “Demand for places at the sixth- form college has exceeded expectations so that area is now being retained for learning.”

Alas, the rest of the sixth-form centre had already been completed and the builders will have to be brought in again to fit out the bottom floor.

The college says it won’t lose out financially by switching the space round from retail to educational use.

But it would have been pound;1million cheaper if the whole building had been completed for educational use in the first place?

The college says it has enough money in its coffers to cover the overspend.

But, as the college’s spokeswoman pointed out: “The college’s finances are in excellent shape, so hopefully all should be well!”
