In the first in a new series of subject features, TES focuses on what the upcoming year will bring for teachers of English, geography, art and design, PE and PSHE.

We spoke to subject associations and advisory groups to get their predictions. Here’s what the experts had to say (full articles free for subscribers):

‘Pull together to keep the spirit of English alive’

You would be forgiven for thinking that English teaching is now just about cramming as many grammar rules as possible into the brains of the nation’s youth. But experts argue that teachers must focus on the joys of studying the subject this year, and not on high-stakes exams.

A year of change in geography

Geography has been enjoying major growth in schools, but the coming year will bring significant change - so teachers should not rest easy on their subject’s recent success.

Paint a positive picture of art

Research shows that art and design teachers feel their concerns about the health of their subject are not being listened to. One expert says that the answer is for them to work together.

A new mindset is needed in PE

Physical education is under scrutiny as the UK turns its attention to tackling rising levels of obesity. PE teachers must interrogate their practice as they adapt to new courses and assessment requirements.

Focus on key skills in PSHE

While school budgets are tight and timetables are packed, the imperative to prepare pupils for the modern world remains as strong as ever, so teachers should help pupils to develop attributes that will serve them well in life and work.
