The birth and marriage certificates for Robert Burns will be the last records to go online as part of a pound;3 million project to transfer Scotland’s historical records into digital images. The extracts for Scotland’s national bard were uploaded on the ScotlandsPeople website on Burns Day to mark the end of the General Register Office for Scotland’s digital programme to make all records available online.

George Lyon, deputy minister for finance and public service reform, said:

“Scotland’s Old Parochial Records go back more than 450 years and include our national bard’s birth and marriage certificates. Since the project began in 2001, there has been an explosion of interest in family history.

But the website also offers an educational research tool.”
