Pipe dreams - Music
Kirkland High and Community College in Fife is launching a piping and drumming project for pupils aged 10 to 14, with funding from the Youth Music Initiative and Creative Scotland. Principal teacher of music Alison Fleming has led the project with Roddy MacLeod, principal of the National Piping Centre in Glasgow which will provide instructors for free tuition. She hopes the initiative will lead to youngsters taking Scottish Qualifications Authority exams in piping and drumming and raise attainment across the board.
Science fair - Stem
The Big Bang Scotland - a one-day fair for young scientists and engineers - will be hosted by Perth this year, on 13 June. The national contest, which incorporates the CREST Awards and Young Engineer for Britain regional competitions, is open to pupils aged 11 to 18, working individually or in teams to develop their projects. Workshops will run throughout the day to stimulate the young people’s scientific curiosity. Registration ends 31 March.

Ranger award - ICT
Telford College student Terri Miller has won the BT Internet Ranger of the Year award in a competition to find the most inspiring and dedicated young internet tutors. The 15-year-old runs computer classes for disabled people, young and old, at her community centre in Leith. Her cousin’s cerebral palsy prompted her to think about the benefits of ICT literacy for people in his situation.

All tied up - eco schools
Ellon Academy teacher Linda Kershaw has helped pupils raise funds by “upcycling” old ties to create a quilt. The end product was bought by Aberdeenshire Council’s waste team, which applauded the novel approach to recycling. The project is part of the school’s Caledonian Award course, which involves raising funds for a trip to encourage pupils’ independence.
