Malawi fund

Global citizenship

Glasgow's Langside Primary has raised pound;12,000 to help build two classrooms in Malawi. The cash will be donated to Holyrood Secondary's Malawi fund. A further pound;7,000 has been donated by Holyrood former pupils and Simple Mind stars Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill. The Holyrood pupils' annual trip to Malawi starts on 15 June.

Fish for a queen

Home economics

Budding chefs in East Ayrshire primaries were challenged to come up with an alternative to coronation chicken (created in 1952) to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The winner was Ava Cook, 8, of Mauchline Primary, who created crispy jubilee fishcakes, using fish from Scotland, cheese from England, leeks from Wales and potatoes from Ireland to represent all the countries of Great Britain.

Healthy IT

Technology

Raigmore Primary in Inverness will fly the flag for Scotland in this month's finals of the UK-wide Make IT Healthy 2012 competition. The challenge was to show how they use IT to lead to a healthier life. P6 pupils made a film about their "Big 100" event in March for "Sport Your Trainers" day, part of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games campaign.

Literacy

Education Scotland will host a conference for parents - "Reading - What's my role?" on 16 June, at Glasgow's Hilton Hotel. It says many parents are concerned about how to develop their child's skills and love of books. Keynote speaker is award-winning author Nicola Morgan. The conference will explore how parents can help.

Life on the Net

Film

The Childnet film competition 2012, aimed at showcasing positive use of the internet, is open to entries. The theme for primaries this year is: "The internet can make your life much easier, let me show you!" Closing date is 15 June at 5pm. To register a group of young people, email film@childnet.com.
